Flower Cakes


This is a page of cakes with flowers made from fondant icing. I think these are my most ambitious cakes. Once you have the basic idea of how to create flowers you can make any number of them in a variety of colours to make your cake special.

Basic shape: A basic round fruit cake. Sometimes it is useful to build up the top edges of the cake with marzipan to make them squarer. This is a better base for the icing.

Decor: This cake was first covered with marzipan. The fondant layer was stuck to the marzipan with honey. A separate semi circular piece of fondant was cut for the open lid. This piece was left to dry out for a day before adding it to the cake. The flowers were made from fondant icing, notice they are a deeper coloured icing in the centre. The basket pattern was piped onto the fondant using a nozzle that pipes several lines at once. The handle is made from two heavy duty wire ties from my local tractor repair shop!

Edith Cake

Basic shape: A basic round fruit cake. Sometimes it is useful to build up the top edges of the cake with marzipan to make them squarer. This is a better base for the icing.

Decor: The flowers were made by rolling the icing very thinly on one edge and then rolling the edge with a cocktail stick. This was then scraped up from the surface from one side so that it folded as it lifted. These pieces were then layered to give the half flower shape.

Basic shape: A basic round fruit cake. Sometimes it is useful to build up the top edges of the cake with marzipan to make them squarer. This is a better base for the icing.

Decor: This cake was first covered with marzipan. The fondant layer was stuck to the marzipan with honey.The basket weave was made from Royal Icing, piped on using a multi line nozzle. The flowers were made from fondant icing, notice they are a deeper coloured icing in the centre.
